Dayton High School Graduation Ceremony Plans

The Dayton High School senior team is planning a graduation ceremony on the original date of:

June 6, 2020 - 1:00 p.m.

Dayton Seniors are invited to “drive-in” to Graduation in personal vehicles.

    • Vehicles may be decorated but must not litter.
    • Vehicles may contain household members only with the number of guests not to exceed the number of available seat belts.

While we realize this will look different from what we are all used to, it is important that we hold these important celebrations and congratulate our seniors on their accomplishments. This plan ensures that students can participate in this momentous occasion in a cohesive way with their classmates and also share the experience with their families. This is the result of 13 years of work!

Graduation Ceremony Will Follow Health and Safety Protocols

These plans have been thoroughly researched for compliance of current safety standards. Our ceremony will follow all Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority guidelines. During this graduation ceremony, students will have the opportunity to hear the regular commencement speakers, have their names called, and receive their diplomas. The following information is a general outline for how this graduation ceremony will take place. We will provide more specific details in the coming weeks.

What Graduation Ceremony Will Entail

Students will report to the Ash Street entrance gate of the Pirate football field and follow directions to park in the field north of the track (by the new gym). Students will park as directed and remain in their vehicles.

Speakers will present their commencement addresses which will be live-streamed for family and friends not in attendance. While we will make every effort to amplify the speeches, students and their families, both on and off-site, are also encouraged to watch online for the best viewing experience.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, students will follow directions to depart the field and will have approximately 30 minutes to arrive at their designated “home base.” Family and friends may join graduates at these locations but no more than 12 people may be in attendance at any one location, each graduate is limited to a single home base, and guests must remain socially distant at all times in accordance with current executive orders, ODE directives, and OHA policy.

A staff parade will then circulate the home bases and bring the diplomas to our graduates so they can receive them in the company of their close friends and family for the expected photo opportunities. After the diplomas are delivered, the graduates will simultaneously release biodegradable balloons in lieu of throwing caps. Please be respectful of the home base and clean up no more than 30 minutes after the balloons are released. This will conclude the 2020 DHS Graduation Ceremony.

How to Watch the Graduation Ceremony

Graduation ceremonies will be live-streamed via Facebook so that friends and family can watch the ceremony from home. A video of the graduation ceremony that includes all commencement addresses and captures of diploma deliveries will also be created and shared with graduates and their families following graduation.

More to Come

More details including timing, dates for practice, and assignments of home-bases will be forthcoming as those details are resolved.

Any new orders from the Governor or directives from ODE, OHA, or other agencies may alter these plans.

It is critical that families follow the plans put in place and adhere to all related directives in order to allow Dayton High School to offer this ceremony in a safe and legal manner.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we find creative student-centered solutions to unexpected restrictions in this unprecedented time. Go Pirates!

Sincerely,

Mike Solem
Dayton High School Principal

Welcome to Dayton Junior High!

Welcome to Dayton Junior and High School!  We are a small school that strives to provide a positive learning atmosphere for all.  Our talented group of teachers and staff encourage all of our  students to participate in academics, sports, and the community.  Our goals are to provide opportunities for success and to maximize the performance for all of our students.

The Dayton administration and staff over the last four years have been reimagining education to be more purposeful and empowering for our students.  We believe that all students have creative genius and it is our responsibility to help them find it. We know that the students of today can learn faster than they can be taught, so we are working to create a learning environment that does not put a ceiling on the student's’ potential.  We have developed partnerships with our community and industry leaders to provide a more rich and experiential learning environment by collaborating and harnessing the expertise of others. At Dayton, we are not afraid to fail, because we know that’s where the real learning occurs.

I am the new principal of both the Junior High and High School this year and am excited to continue the work that has been going on at our two schools.   Growing and learning alongside such a talented group of staff and students is what fuels me.

Sincerely,

Mike Solem
